Police Say Driver Shot By Officers Rammed Patrol Vehicle

A narrative has been released describing how a traffic stop in Downtown Redding ended with a man shot to death early Sunday morning. The sheriff’s office is leading the investigation, which is standard practice when someone is shot by Redding Police. It was 3:20AM and an RPD Officer patrolling around South Market and Parkview saw a car swerving across multiple traffic lanes. Suspecting a DUO, the officer pulled the car over, and they stopped in the parking lot of an office on Pine Street about halfway up the hill. There were three people in the car and the officer thought the driver seemed to be under the influence and acting strangely. A records check linked the car to a man wanted for felony theft and robbery charges in Washington State. The officer called for backup and two other officers showed up, each with a civilian ride-along passenger. Officers say they approached the car and told the driver to get out, but he refused and rolled up his window, then shifted into reverse and quickly backed into the embankment at the edge of the lot. He then sped forward toward the three patrol cars, according to police, sideswiping one before driving toward another that had one of the civilians sitting in it. He didn’t hit that car but reportedly rushed toward the third car, forcing an officer to dodge out of the way. The car rammed head-on into the police car hard enough to set off his own airbags. At that point the suspect had apparently already been shot by one of the officers. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The civilian ride-along in the police car and one of the passengers in the suspect’s car were treated for injuries from the collision. The sheriff’s office and D.A.’s office continue to investigate.
