14-Year-Old Girl Leads Officers On 21 Mile High Speed Chase

A group of children led Redding Police on a very long chase at very high speeds in a stolen minivan Saturday night. Just after 11 O’clock Officer Khae Saelee saw a Dodge Caravan with its lights off cruising through the parking lot of stores on Hilltop Drive across the street from the mall. Suspicious of what they were up to, he ran a check and found the van had been reported stolen in Red Bluff, so he tried to pull the van over. The driver fled south on Hilltop with the officer in pursuit, then onto Southbound Interstate 5 at Cypress. Help was requested from the CHP and a helicopter was soon following the chase from above. They continued south to Anderson, got off briefly at North Street, south on Ventura and back onto I-5 at Balls Ferry. They took another detour on Deschutes, over to 273 and then back onto I-5, taking the Main Street exit through Cottonwood to Bowman Road. Somewhere along the way the van had picked up damage to the left front wheel. The tire went flat and then the wheel fell off on Bowman near Landes Road. The six occupants all surrendered. They ranged in age from 11 to 15. Two had been reported as runaways, one from Shasta County and one from Red Bluff. The driver was a 14-year-old girl. She was booked into juvenile hall and the rest were turned over to their parents. The chase went more than 21 miles and reached speeds of 114 miles an hour on the freeway and 75 on city streets, running through multiple stop signs and red lights. Traffic was fortunately very light.
