RPD: Man Suffers Gunshot Wounds During Marijuana Robbery

A man was shot during what Redding Police say was a marijuana robbery Wednesday night at an East Redding motel. Redding Police were called at 6 O’clock to the Red Lion off East Cypress and Bechelli. Witnesses reported seeing a man who appeared to be bleeding from the lower abdomen being loaded into a car, which left the scene. Staff at Mercy Hospital then reported that a gunshot victim had been dropped off there. 39-year-old Udom Chao of Redding had a gunshot wound that went all the way through both of his legs. He’s still hospitalized and is expected to recover. Chao was uncooperative with police and gave them false information about how he was shot. At the motel, police found a shell casing, a slug, blood and marijuana scattered inside and just outside the door to one of the rooms. Surveillance showed an African-American man pointing a handgun at the Asian men while walking out of the room carrying two large garbage bags, which apparently contained stolen marijuana. Surveillance also captured the robber getting into a car and leaving. He’s a black man in his late 30’s to early 40’s. He left in a blue or gray 2011 Ford Fusion with license plate number 7-U-H-H-3-7-3. Police say he should not be approached because he’s considered armed and dangerous.
