Habitat Restoration Project Hopes To Benefit Sacramento River Salmon

A side channel to the Sacramento River has been restored at Anderson River Park to serve as a habitat for juvenile salmon. The project was completed by the U.S. bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, state agencies and the Yurok Tribe, which excavated a half mile to allow year-round flow through about a mile of channel. The downstream part of the channel had become choked with weeds and occupied by non-native fish that fed on young salmon. Now that water is flowing through and woody material has been placed along the sides, the developing salmon have a better chance of survival. The project was done as part of a series of habitat improvements that included two gravel replenishment projects in the Redding area.
