Park Service Closes Parts Of Whiskeytown Recreation Area Due Risk Of Debris Flows

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, which was hit very hard by the Carr Fire, is still in a fragile state of recovery. A risk of debris flows from the recent storms has prompted the Park Service to temporarily close the south side of the park. That includes Crystal Creek Road and Kennedy Memorial Drive at Whiskeytown Dam. Intense rainfall on Shasta Bally may cause the erosive soils on the steep slopes to send boulders, trees and other material crashing down the Brandy Creek, Boulder Creek, Paige Boulder Creek, Mill Creek and Crystal Creek Watersheds. When the threat of debris flows recedes with the wet weather, the south side will be opened to the public again.
