Mid-Winter Count Shows 86 Bald Eagles At Lake Shasta

An annual count of Bald Eagles at Shasta Lake matches the record high set in 2007. Last week, wildlife biologists on the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area completed the mid-winter Bald Eagle survey. The count took three days due to the size of the lake. The total count was 86 Bald Eagles and one Golden Eagle. According to the Forest Service, Shasta Lake is home to the largest population of nesting Bald Eagles in California. January through July is the Bald Eagle nesting season. Eagle observers are reminded that state and federal laws protect Bald Eagles and their nest sites. Disturbance around the nest could cause the birds to abandon the nest.
