Searchers Rescue Two Men After ATV Breaks Down

Two men were rescued in Eastern Shasta County after an off-road adventure left them stranded. At 6:40PM Tuesday night Heidi Corrigan reported that her boyfriend, 30-year-old Marcus Pond and his friend, 31-year-old Ben Riley, had not returned from Fenders Ferry Road near Highway 299, where they had gone for a ride on a Polaris side-by-side all terrain vehicle. The last word from them was when Riley checked in with his wife around midday. Burney-area deputies found the truck and trailer the men had used to haul the Polaris, but they were unable to contact them by cell phone. It was raining, in the mid-30’s and there was a foot and a half of snow on the ground. Aircraft couldn’t be used because of the weather, so search and rescue was called out. Apparently the Polaris had broken down in the afternoon and the men started backtracking until they got into cell phone range and got through at around 10:15PM. SHASCOM used GPS coordinates from the cell phone that allowed Cal-Fire to find the men. They were cold but uninjured, treated by medical personnel and released.
