SWAT Team Called To Ono To Arrest Suspected Robber Armed With AK-47

A man suspected of robbing a store and his own mother has been captured by Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies after a lengthy standoff. 31-year-old Jake Houser had two felony warrants, one for an armed robbery of the Midway Market off Highway 273 between Redding and Anderson on December 8th. The other warrant says that on January 11th Houser assaulted his mother and took her car. He apparently had told people that he wouldn’t be taken without a fight. At 4:30PM Sunday afternoon deputies found Houser at a Cabin on Newscott Lane off Platina Road near Ono. He ran inside and started barricading the front door as deputies set up a perimeter around the cabin. They say they heard a gunshot inside and a bullet came through a wall and struck the ground between two patrol cars. A deputy got Houser on the phone, and he claimed he was heavily armed and had a grenade. That’s when the SWAT Team, hostage negotiating team and bomb squad were all called out. Tear gas was lobbed inside but Houser wouldn’t budge. At one point he agreed to give up one of his weapons and he threw a 30-30 rifle outside. After several hours, more tear gas finally helped convince Houser to surrender. Inside, the SWAT Team found a loaded AK-47 but no explosives. He was booked on his warrants, with more charges pending.
