Charges Dropped Against Woman Accused Of Being An Accomplice To Elderly Man’s Murder

A woman who has had murder charges pending against her for years for the death of a Siskiyou County man has been cleared because of a change in the law. The Siskiyou Daily News reports that 29-year-old Chellsie Johnson was arrested last week in Redding and transported to Siskiyou County. In 2012 Johnson accompanied her husband at the time, Darryl Lawrence, in a burglary of the home of 83-year-old Henry Mariani in Weed. Johnson was outside serving as a lookout while Lawrence went through the house looking for things to steal. It went wrong when Mariani woke up and confronted the intruder. There was a struggle, during which Lawrence threw the elderly man against a night stand and then struck him with his knee, breaking some ribs that punctured his lung and liver. Mariani died of his injuries. Lawrence stole a small amount of cash, bank cards and other items and the couple fled. Lawrence was later captured on surveillance trying to use the cards at ATMs. He ended up using them to buy $150 worth of video games on the Internet. Lawrence was sentenced in 2015 to 25 years to life in prison. Because the murder of Mariani was committed during the commission of another crime to which Johnson was an accessory, she was facing a murder charge as well. However, a State Senate bill signed by the Governor last year changed the circumstances under which an accomplice can be charged. Last Thursday the charges were dropped and Johnson walked free.
