Man Wanted For Abducting Woman Captured After Standoff

A man sought by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office has been captured after a standoff Friday afternoon. Maitland Carpenter was already a wanted man when he was accused last week of abducting a Susanville woman. She was later found safe, but deputies were still looking for Carpenter until Friday, when they were told that he was barricaded in the bedroom of a home on Kei Deh Street north of Susanville. The report said he had a gun and a knife and was holding someone against their will. Deputies surrounded the home with help from several other agencies. Over the next few hours the occupants of the home gradually came outside, including the person who reportedly had been held at gunpoint. Carpenter was contacted by phone but refused to come out until tear gas canisters were lobbed inside. He then surrendered and was booked into jail.
