The Tehama County District Attorney’s Office has shared some information about a man shot to death by Red Bluff Police early last Wednesday morning. Officers were called at 10:30PM last Tuesday night to the Meadow Vista Apartments on Vista Way on reports of an unspecified altercation. When they arrived, officers reported being fire upon by a man with a handgun. An officer returned fire and struck 38-year-old Alex Francisco Vazquez. He fell to the ground but hung onto the gun despite orders to drop it. Officers tried to talk to Vasquez for about an hour and a half as he lay bleeding. Eventually, four officers used a ballistic shield to approach him. Vasquez reportedly shot at them again and two officers shot back, inflicting fatal wounds. Vazquez was listed by the FBI as armed and dangerous and had a federal warrant for possession of drugs with intent to distribute. The District Attorney’s Office lists four prior convictions against Vasquez, mostly for selling drugs, but also felony evading an officer and felony street terrorism, though details about the circumstances of those cases are not provided. Red Bluff Police Chief Kyle Sanders says video recordings are being reviewed, including body cam footage, as the investigation into the shooting continues.
