West Redding high schools were locked down Thursday after a man mentioned having a weapon. Police were called at 1:15PM to University Preparatory Academy and all area schools were ordered onto lockdown. Officers were given a description of the man and he was soon spotted walking out of a nearby business. The situation was apparently a misunderstanding. He had found a student’s school I.D. across the street and went to the U-Prep office to return it. While there he said “I shouldn’t be here, I have a weapon.” He was referring to a small hatchet he had in his backpack, and no threats were ever made or implied. The man was released and the schools returned to normal.
