Jury Finds Man Guilty Of July Murder

A Redding man has been found guilty by a Shasta County jury of murdering a man at a house on Bechelli Lane. It’s the home of Russell Hunt, who has run for various elected positions in local government many times, but has never won a race. Hunt was never implicated in the death of 37-year-old Steven Michael Johnson. Redding Police were called last July 23th on reports of a man who was bloody and in need of help. Officers said Johnson had visible wounds showing he had been a victim of violent homicide, including lacerations and blunt force injuries. 27-year-old Christopher McHatton was implicated after police found Johnson’s blood in McHatton’s car. He was convicted Wednesday of second degree murder. He faces 16 years to life when he’s sentenced. His mother, Kathleen McHatten, faces charges of being an accessory after the fact and intimidating a witness. Her trial is set to begin next month.
