City: T-Shirt Causes Sewer Backup

The lack of toilet paper may have caused a sewer backup in Redding Wednesday night, and the City of Redding is asking people to avoid flushing anything but toilet paper. Crews responded to a backup at one of the city’s lift stations and found a T-shirt that was used in place of toilet paper. With people avoiding going out, and a lack of available toilet paper, people are resorting to the use of other materials when using the restroom. The city’s wastewater management department is urging customers to avoid flushing anything but toilet paper. If you must resort to using anything else, they are asking residents to remember an important message ,“Bag it. Don’t flush it.” There are many products available on the market that falsely claim to be flushable. Anything aside from toilet paper works to create a sewer backup, and the clogs in the sewer system can cause fecal matter to back up into showers, toilets and sinks. If a clog does occur the city may not be able to get it cleared as quickly due to many people who are self quarantining.
