Update: 2 Dead, Deputy Injured In Fiery Crash In Tehama County

Two people were found dead after a shooting in Tehama County Thursday night, and a sheriff’s deputy responding to the incident was trapped in his burning patrol car after a hit-and-run involving a big rig, according to the Corning Observer. The shooting apparently happened around 8:30pm in the Richfield area north of Corning at Thomes Creek near Highway 99-W. Deputies responding for shots fired arrived to find only a bullet riddled vehicle in the creek bed. Someone then called 9-1-1 and said a shooting victim was en route to Saint Elizabeth Hospital. That man later died. A 2nd victim was found in a creek bed. Meanwhile a responding deputy was on Highway 99-W approaching Gyle Road when a Wal-Mart tractor-trailer pulled into his path. The interceptor struck the back of the trailer, then went off the road into a fence and a tree and caught fire. Bystanders extinguished the fire and extricated the deputy. He was transported to a hospital. The Tehama County Deputy Sheriff’s Association says he suffered only minor injuries. The big rig driver continued on to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, where the CHP tracked him down. No suspects have been identified, but deputies believe the shooting involved two groups of Hispanics, and several vehicles then left the scene. The identities of the dead men have not been released.
