Calm, But No Plans Yet From California Governor Amid Unrest

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state can no longer pay lip service to ending systemic racism without concrete action. But he’s yet to endorse policy changes or announce any concrete actions in response to protests across California over the death of George Floyd. Some California leaders say Newsom’s tone, in an impassioned call to confront racism on Monday, is right for the tumultuous time. But others would like to see the governor advance policy change and are questioning his decision to deploy the National Guard to cities that ask. A Newsom spokesman says the governor has been “doing the work behind the scenes.”
