Strong north winds presented a challenge to firefighting crews to maintain their hard-fought control lines on the August Lightning Complex as new evacuation orders were issued Thursday in Trinity County. The sheriff’s offices says that residents need to evacuate areas north of the Kettenpom Store, up to the area of Bluff Creek and east of Zenia Lake Mountain Road. The largest fire in California history remains 77% contained and has held at 1,029,600 acres. The complex is burning in 7 counties, including the far southwestern corner of Shasta County. Damage assessment crews in Southern Trinity County have confirmed 552 structures lost, but survivors still await a federal disaster declaration that will allow FEMA and SBA assistance. A burned area emergency response team has arrived to direct rehab work as they race with time to prepare damaged hillsides and watersheds before the rainy season brings flooding, sediment flows, falling trees and rockslides.
