Driver Of Vehicle That Crashed Killing Teenage Passenger Was Already On Parole For DUI

A man who allegedly caused the death of his passenger Tuesday when he ran a red light while driving on drugs was already on parole for DUI and had a suspended license. At 4 O’clock Tuesday a Toyota 4Runner driven by 24-year-old Robert Christopher Maughs of Shasta Lake City was northbound on Lake Boulevard when Maughs reportedly ran the red light at Oasis Road and collided with a Buick. The red light violation was confirmed by witnesses as well as surveillance video. The Buick driver, 31-year-old Cassandra Petty, had minor injuries. She had been making a left turn from Lake to Oasis and the impact knocked the Toyota onto its side and sent it into the light pole at the corner of the intersection. Petty sustained minor injuries. Maughs and his passenger, 19-year-old Jimmie Junior Adkison the Second, were trapped for an extended period of time before they could be extricated by Redding Fire Personnel. Adkison was declared dead at the scene. Maughs suffered major injuries and was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. Neither Maughs nor Adkison was wearing a seatbelt.
