Owners Of Downtown Restaurant Suffer Burns In House Fire

La Cabana Restaurant, a longtime favorite in Downtown Redding, is closed after a terrible fire destroyed the home of the owners in East Redding Wednesday morning. Matilde and Jesus Manzo suffered burns and severe smoke inhalation and are at UC Davis Medical Center. Local journalist Doni Chamberlan has organized a GoFundMe account and Rita’s Kitchen on Hartnell is accepting donations for the family. The house on Ledell Drive off Churn Creek Road was reported on fire at 5AM. Some people had been walking by and noticed flames coming out the front living room window. They began yelling and banging on the house. Nobody could make it to the front door so the bystanders pulled the Manzo’s daughter and her two children out of a bedroom window. Matilde and Jesus had to be rescued by Redding Firefighters, who were quickly on scene. The house had no smoke alarms. Damage is estimated at $200,000 to the house and $75,000 for contents. The cause is still under investigation.
