COVID Case Rate Jumps In Shasta County

Shasta County remains in the red tier as the case rate and positivity rate are increasing. 25 new covid cases were reported from Sunday and Monday. The total number of cases is now 11,488. The adjusted case rate per 100,000 residents is now 7.4 up from 5.1. The positivity rate also increased from 1.8% to 2.7%. Because the case rate is now above 7, testing is now required for youth football. Public health estimates that there are 132 active cases in Shasta County. 7 people are currently hospitalized and 2 are in intensive care.

California is turning to a simpler, statewide approach as it prepares to lift most pandemic restrictions on businesses and workplaces by June 15th. Governor Gavin Newsom had previously adopted a system that put each of the 58 counties into one of four color-coded tiers, based on a slew of metrics on case rates and hospitalizations. That’s all going out the window as long as most Californians can access the vaccine and hospitalization rates remain low by the start of summer. The news comes as California expects to have administered more than 30 million vaccine doses by the end of April and as case rates are low.

Anyone 16 or older can now get the Pfizer vaccine in Shasta County. The Pfizer vaccine is the only vaccine approved for people 16 and older. A mass vaccine clinic is planned for this Friday at Shasta College. Appointments can be made at myturn.ca.gov. Many other clinics are planned including some with weekend and evening hours.
