Man Killed In Officer Involved Shooting On Court Street

Redding Police Officers were involved in a shootout with a suspected car thief that ended when the suspect was shot and killed by officers Tuesday afternoon. At about 1PM officers received a Lo-Jack hit that a stolen Ford pickup was in Downtown Redding. Several officers responded and began searching a neighborhood on Leland Avenue. A pickup matching the description was spotted on Grange Street that was driving recklessly. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver failed to yield to the officers. The driver continued to drive recklessly on a number of downtown streets and officers called the pursuit off due to public safety concerns. Eventually the ford pickup crashed into another vehicle on South Market Street. The driver armed himself with a rifle and got out and ran from officers onto Veda Street. Other officers arrived and a foot pursuit was initiated. Police say that the unidentified suspect fired several rounds at officers. The man then ran south down the railroad tracks for about 200 yards and than turned around before heading north eventually crossing Railroad Avenue. He than ran through a dirt lot in the 3500 block of Court Street near some homes. The suspect again fired a shot at officers as he was running down Court Street. Near Grandview Avenue the man saw a vehicle parked along Court Street with the drivers door open. The suspect then fired another round into the air. At that point an officer fired at the suspect from his department issued rifle. The man fell to the ground and medical aid was called. The man was declared dead at the scene. The suspect’s identity has not been released. Officers are still searching for a female that was in the pickup when it crashed. She ran from the scene and has not been located.
