California officials say they’re making good progress on clearing wildfire debris from properties in Shasta, Trinity and Butte counties. Property owners incur no cost if they agreed to have the work done by CalRecycle and the Office of Emergency Services. Burned metal, concrete, ash and contaminated soil has been cleared from about 60% of the 1,396 properties. Once they’re cleared of debris, a contractor collects soil samples for testing, and if it’s safe, fiber rolls and a biodegradable mulch is applied to prevent erosion. After a final inspection, the land is returned to the owners so they can rebuild. 96 of the 100 Shasta County properties in the Zogg Fire zone have been cleared.
