The COVID-19 death toll in Shasta County remains at 220. Another 29 cases have been reported from Friday and Saturday, as well as 1,143 negative tests. There have been 11,830 cases so far. An estimated 137 people have the virus right now, 8 people are hospitalized and 2 are in intensive care.

Deciding that the benefits outweigh the risks, a coalition of health officials are again recommending the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. At least a dozen of the nearly 8 million people who got the J&J vaccine developed severe blood clotting less than 2 weeks after getting the shot. Another study shows that the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are safe for pregnant women.

In Shasta County, men are 1.58 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than women, yet men are lagging behind women in the vaccination rate. Overall, Shasta County has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state. Vaccine is free of charge and any Shasta County resident 16 and older is eligible.
