In September of 2018, as firefighting resources and the nerves of local residents were stretched thin from the devastating Carr Fire, another large and destructive fire broke out north of Lake Shasta in the Sacramento River Canyon. In the lengthy investigation, no cause for the Delta Fire was ever made public until Wednesday when Cal-Fire arrested 57-year-old Cynthia Ann Leroux . She’s accused of intentionally starting the Delta Fire, which destroyed 63,000 acres and 45 structures including 20 homes. The fire closed Interstate 5 and the railroad for five days, causing a major impact to commerce. The Forest Service estimates $59 Million of forest restoration costs. There were serious injuries, including to a truck driver who had to run from the flames and was badly burned. Another truck driver suffered a serious head injury while trying to help someone else. Leroux is also accused of starting two other fires. She was booked into Shasta County Jail Wednesday and is being held on $1 Million bail. Leroux faces a total of 20 felony counts and 2 enhancements and charges are elevated because there was already a state of emergency due to the Carr Fire. If convicted of all the charges, Leroux could be sentenced to well over 50 years in prison.
