Public Health Warns Of Summertime Spike In Local COVID-19 Cases

Shasta County Public Health says this area shows a classic example of the three criteria that could lead to a local summertime spike in Coronavirus cases. One is lower vaccination rates. Only 42.1% of eligible people have had at least one dose, compared to 60.8% statewide. Another factor is high temperatures because the heat forces people indoors where the virus spreads much more easily. The third factor is low adherence to precautions among the unvaccinated.

Shasta County has lost 228 people to Coronavirus. There were another 41 confirmed cases and 820 negative tests from Friday and Saturday, for a total so far of 12,360 cases. An estimated 161 people have the virus right now, 14 are hospitalized and 2 are in intensive care.

Vaccine is now available in Shasta County for children as young as 12, with parental consent.
