A Shasta County man has been given a potential life sentence for a DUI crash that killed a Kentucky woman. On the evening of January 29th of last year, 27-year-old Diana Elizabeth Schalk of Pembroke, Kentucky was driving a Chevy S10 pickup on Highway 299 east of Grizzly Gulch Road near the Whiskeytown scales when she was struck head-on by a Toyota pickup that had drifted over the double-yellow center line of the highway. Schalk was taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital, but she died of her injuries. The driver of the Toyota was 44-year-old Hawk Blaze Bergstrom. He suffered major injuries. When the CHP arrived on scene, Bergstrom was given a breathalyzer test that showed a blood alcohol level exceeding. 25%, more than 3 times the legal limit. Bergstrom has a prior DUIi from 2015 as well. He was found guilty of second degree murder by a Shasta County jury last month and was sentenced on Friday to 15-years-to-life in state prison. The D.A.’s Office says that, on average, someone is killed by a drunk driver in the United States every 52 minutes.
