Forest Service: Salt Fire Sparked By Vehicle Along I-5

Forest Service investigators believe they know the cause of the Salt Fire, and they’re turning to the public for help. It appears the fire was started by hot materials coming from a vehicle, possibly from a failing Catalytic Convertor. That was the cause of the Cow Fire off Highway 44 June 20th. The Salt Fire started Wednesday shortly before 1:30PM along Northbound I-5 just north of the Gilman Road exit. The vehicle was likely in the slow lane and may have been going at a lower-than-average speed. It’s unlikely that the driver was aware of the destruction in their wake. Investigators are hoping that the driver, or someone else who can identify the vehicle, will call them at 226-2783.
