All evacuation warnings for the Lava Fire in Siskiyou County have been lifted. The Lava Fire is still estimated at 25,003 acres. It stretches from the Mount Shasta Vistas in the north to the slopes of Mount Shasta in the south. It’s 70% contained. There’s still no information available about structural damage.
Wednesday afternoon a helicopter helping to fight the Lava Fire made an emergency landing into the water of Lake Shastina. The helicopter sank but the pilot was able to swim out of the lake and walk away. The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the Forest Service.
25 miles up Highway 97 from the Lava Fire is the Tennant Fire, which is now just burning dead and downed fuels from previous fires, and the occasional Juniper Tree. The Tennant Fire is estimated at 10,560 acres with 81% containment.
