Man Who Killed Woman In 1995 Will Be Sentenced To 3 Life Sentences

A vicious murderer who brutally killed a Redding woman in 1995 will spend the rest of his life in prison. On Monday, 43-year-old James Earl Watkins pled guilty to the murder of Christine Munro. The 37-year-old nurse and mother of four was jogging on the Sacramento River Trail when Watkins pulled her into the bushes, assaulted her and slashed her throat. A DNA sample from under Munro’s fingernails led to the arrest of Watkins, who was serving time in a Texas prison for unrelated crimes. He was just 17-years-old when he lived in Redding in 1995 so he was not eligible for the death penalty. Christine’s family was consulted by the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, and they’re satisfied with the sentence that Watkins will receive on August 25th. He pled guilty to first degree murder and admitted to three special allegations for kidnapping, robbery and lying in wait. He’ll be given three life sentences with no possibility of parole, and he waived all his appeal rights.
