Supervisors Vote To Make APD Chief New Shasta County Sheriff

Anderson Police Chief Michael Johnson will be the next Shasta County Sheriff, following a 4 to 1 vote Tuesday by the board of supervisors. Patrick Jones cast the dissenting vote. Johnson will be the first outsider ever to hold the position. The Sheriff position will be on the ballot next June, but the term lasts until January of 2023. The last elected Sheriff was Tom Bosenko, but he retired early and then-Undersheriff Eric Magrini was appointed to complete the term. Last month Magrini was given the newly created position of Assistant County Executive Officer. Undersheriff Jason Barnhart has been in charge ever since, but he apparently doesn’t want the job. There’s been some discontent within the department lately, which has been shared with the public by both the Deputy Sheriff’s Association and a group representing captains and lieutenants. Johnson told the board Tuesday that he’s well aware of the tension he’s stepping into. Johnson has been the Chief of the APD for nine years and City of Anderson officials testified Tuesday that they’ll hate to lose him but are confident that he’s the right person to take charge at the Sheriff’s Department. The board last week raised the Sheriff’s annual salary $205,000. Chief Johnson becomes Sheriff Johnson on August 15th. He’ll be a guest on the KQMS Morning Show next Wednesday, August 4th.
